OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is the electronic conversion of images of typed, handwritten or printed text into machine-encoded and editable text. It is widely used as a form of information entry from printed paper data records, whether passport documents, invoices, bank statements, computerized receipts, business cards or books. Our OCR software has being developing by Tsinghua University since 1985, it focuses on the recognition of Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Arabic characters.

Based on this OCR tech, Passport Reader is specially invented to extract identity data from ICAO 9303 & non-ICAO compliant travel documents, such as Passport, E-Passport, Visa, ID card, Driving License and other travel documents around the world. We have two solutions for passport check and ID scan:

Desktop Solution: it consists of hardware (scanner) and software (OCR SDK), the scanner is responsible for capture high-resolution document images; OCR SDK will process these images and automatically provide digitalized ID info. After integration, passengers just need to place their ID or passport face-down on the scanner, all ID information can automatically fill into customs system within 2 seconds.

Mobile Solution: the work flow of Mobile ID Scanner is as following: First, image capturing: using the front camera of a smart phone or ipad to capture high-resolution document images, in this step, Passport Reader applies Video Streaming Capture Mode to improve customer experience; second, image pre-processing: this step includes image de-skews, image denoising, image binarization, layout analysis, character segmentation; third, OCR recognition.

Mobile ID Scanner for Quick Registration

Identity document keeps us company from our birth to our death. When we are born, we will get our birth certification; when we are grown up, we will get our identity card, driver license, passport, or even citizen card; when you get married, you will get a marriage certificate in some country; and when you are dead, you will get a death certificate. When looking around the world, there are so many different types of identity documents that are issued by different countries. It will cause problem to record all these identity documents in the same time, but with Mobile ID Scanner, this problem can be easily solved.

It is able to extract data from various ID cards, passports and visa. For ID card reading, Mobile ID Scanner currently support Malaysian ID card reading (MyKad reading), Thailand ID card reading, Singapore ID card reading and Chinese ID card reading (both second generation resident ID card , HongKong ID card and Taiwan ID card). What’s more, it can also extract data from ICAO 9303 standard travel documents. For ID cards which have MRZ lines on it, our mobile application can easily decode it. Although, it deals with ID cards, many people don’t need to worry about the safety of their identity, since mobile passport reader can work offline, and the data won’t be saved in the application.

OCR MRZ Document Reader helps Airport Border Control

The convenience of public transportation has being boosting international travel. People prefer to spend their holiday abroad. In 2016, there were 122 million Chinese people who have traveled aboard in this single year. In order to manage this high volume of passengers, every country has turned to Travel Document Reader, namely Passport Reader, for help.

Generally speaking, we have passport, e-passport, ID cards, visa, driver license to prove our identity. They contain your basic information, such as your name, nationality, date of birth, gender, passport number or ID number, expiration date and your photograph. Traditionally, customs officer has to type everything manually; now, with the help of OCR (optical character recognition) technology, it’s possible to transfer printed texts into digital information automatically within few seconds. Passport Reader is based on OCR tech developed by Tsinghua University, and it helps to simplify the whole registration process, and in the meanwhile ensures the accuracy of ID data.

It can support documents in ultraviolet and infrared images; it could decode MRZ and access data directly from passport chip (RFID function). The workflow of Wintone passport reader is as following:

1, automatically detect document;

2, capture high-resolution document images in visible, IR, UV illumination;

3, transfer these images to the SDK via USB;

4, process the image with OCR technology;

5, read passport chip with RFID function;

6, get results and save in designated location;
